France announces R&D agency for military artificial intelligence

Amiad will house 300 technical and research staff, as well as a dedicated supercomputer

The French government will set up an R&D agency for military artificial intelligence in the coming months, armed forces minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced.

The Ministerial Agency for Defence AI (Amiad) will be funded by around €300 million per year, Lecornu told the newspaper Les Echos on 8 March. This sum would constitute the entirety of the €2 billion the government previously promised to spend on defence AI between 2024 and 2030.
