French Academy of Sciences urges government to reverse cuts

Learned society joins fight against research budget reductions

The Academy of Sciences, France’s top learned society, has joined researchers and university leaders in urging the government to reconsider its decision to cut the 2024 budget for higher education and research by almost 3 per cent.

The government passed a decree on 21 February that mandates a €10 billion reduction in government spending for 2024, following the downward revision of France’s expected growth for the year from 1.4 per cent to 1 per cent.
