Science academy gets tough on antibiotics research

Germany’s academy of sciences, Leopoldina, has called on government and academics to improve the way antibiotics research is carried out to prevent the further spread of resistant bacteria.

In a position paper on problems surrounding antibiotics research the academy said that growing bacteria resistance caused by years of antibiotics overuse was a serious challenge for humankind. The Leopoldina said that more collaboration between industry, patients, politics and academia, and between different countries, is needed to tackle the problem.
