German team moves into Russian Arctic home

A team of researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar Research has moved to a new base at a Russian-built research station that opened recently.

The Samoylov station in Siberia was built to replace an earlier German-Russian research station, which was created to mark the beginning of polar research collaboration between the two countries in 1998.

The construction of the replacement station was ordered by Russia’s president Vladimir Putin in 2010, after he visited the previous station, which was so small that some members of the research teams had to sleep in tents.
