PhD report to focus on family

Germany’s next national report on PhD development will cover how to combine having a family with having a research career, according to the Max Planck PhDnet group.

The BuWin report, which is published on behalf of the German government and focuses on the trials and tribulations of PhD candidates, comes out every 4 years. The next edition, scheduled for 2017, will include an analysis of what can be done to make it easier for German PhD candidates to combine their work with family duties, according to PhDnet, a group representing PhD students.

The group held a meeting this month with the government to launch the report’s preparatory and data-gathering phase. For the report, data on PhD education and career perspectives from institutions across Germany will be collected and analysed.
