Germany's €124-million deep-sea research ship Sonne is to start its scientific journey in January.
After several weeks of testing and 20 months of building work, the ship was inaugurated on 17 November by Johanna Wanka, the federal research minister, and Stephan Weil, the minister-president of Lower Saxony. Sonne is docked in the state’s Wilhelmshaven port.The ship can cater for 40 scientists and will focus on deep-sea research in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with a particular focus on climate change, raw resources and the impact of exploration activities on marine ecosystems.
