Universities in North Rhine-Westphalia have teamed up with the state government to offer education to international refugees.
On 7 December, the state government announced it had signed a memorandum of understanding with local universities to support refugees who want to start or continue university degrees. The deal is part of a wider initiative by the German government to create a more welcoming culture for international students and researchers at universities.
The universities have pledged to offer support and advice to refugees wanting to study in North Rhine-Westphalia, to help them find a place to live and apply for funding and to make academic staff more aware of the problems faced by refugees in their daily lives.
