Rectors back Parliament’s opposition to funds diversion

Germany’s association of rectors has welcomed the European Parliament’s decision to contest the European Commission’s plan to divert funds from Horizon 2020 to an investment fund.

On 20 April, two of the main Parliament committees voted to oppose the use of Horizon 2020 money to create a European Fund for Strategic Investments. In a press release the following day, Horst Hippler, the president of the HRK, said: “It’s gratifying that MEPs share the perspective of universities and recognise R&D as the basis for Europe’s competitiveness.”

The HRK called on the German government to withdraw its support for the investment fund and instead support the Parliament in its upcoming negotiations with the Commission.
