Hippler re-elected by rectors

Horst Hippler is to serve a second term as president of Germany's rectors' association and he has set out his immediate priorities at the HRK's annual gathering.

At the HRK’s annual meeting in Kaiserslautern, held on 11 and 12 May, it was announced that Hippler, first chosen to lead the HRK in May 2012, had been re-elected for a further three years.

The election was held behind closed doors, with the identities of the candidates largely kept secret. Lothar Zechlin, a former rector of the University of Duisburg-Essen, was critical of this in a piece for the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel. “The reasoning that it is ultimately an internal matter for the HRK is more reminiscent of a rabbit-breeders’ or stamp-collectors’ club than of a society that is the voice of universities, demands public attention and is largely supported by government subsidies,” he said.
