Polarstern back in action

Germany's Polarstern research ship has once again set sail for the Arctic, carrying a team of 53 researchers from 11 countries.

The ship, maintained by the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar Research, a Helmholtz centre, left the port of Bremerhaven, northern Germany, on 18 May. The researchers will focus on the effects of climate change in the Arctic.

According to a statement by the institute, several instruments will be used for the first time on this expedition to constantly measure the temperature, salinity, gas composition and algae content of the Arctic seas, building on the summer expeditions of recent years.
