Pro-GM lobby calls for labelling laws

A lobby group in favour of genetic modification is petitioning the German government to require clear labelling for all products in which genetic engineering has played any role.

On 18 May, the online news site Science Insider reported that the move was a political gamble by the pro-GM group Forum Grüne Vernunft, aimed at showing the public how widespread genetic engineering is and that it is "nothing to be afraid of".

The petition, which went online on 19 May, calls on the German government to prepare a law that would require all products that have been directly or indirectly created through genetic engineering—be they food, feed, clothes, drugs or washing powder—to be clearly labelled, and to request similar action at EU level. If the petition receives 50,000 signatures in four weeks, it must be considered by the German parliament.
