The Jülich research centre is to merge its nuclear division with the Experimental Reactor Consortium (AVR) to create a company focused on nuclear decommissioning and waste disposal.
The company, which will have about 300 employees, will come under the umbrella of Energiewerke Nord (EWN), which is wholly owned by the German federal government and responsible for the decommissioning of public nuclear facilities and the management of the resulting radioactive waste.
In a statement on 8 June, Jülich said that the aim of the company was to ensure Germany’s safe exit from nuclear energy.
