Berlin announces record R&D spend

Germany’s federal government expects to spend a total of €14.9 billion on R&D in 2015, up from €14.6bn in 2014.

The total for 2015 will be a record high and a 65 per cent increase on 10 years ago, the federal research ministry announced on 30 June. The ministry itself expects to spend €8.8bn on R&D this year—a 72 per cent increase on its 2005 total.

“Through this investment in R&D, we have managed to make Germany the technology and innovation engine of Europe. We must now continue down this road to achieve the greatest possible effect with the money invested,” said Johanna Wanka, Germany’s research minister.
