Germany divided on defence research

Academics in Germany have said they will refrain on ethical grounds from applying to EU programmes funding defence research and innovation.

The European Commission set out plans for funding defence research and innovation on 7 June, following a general groundswell of support from national governments and MEPs. However, some research institutions and individual researchers do not intend to participate.

Germany’s defence minister Ursula von der Leyen told MEPs in Strasburg last week that more defence research was needed in response to US President Donald Trump’s frequent denunciations of Nato. “We have to [take] defence into our own hands,” she said.
