Münster staff accused of mistreating lab mice

The city of Münster has filed criminal charges against three employees of the University of Münster’s medical faculty, claiming that they kept lab mice illegally and mishandled them.

The university was given an anonymous tip-off on 20 June that 77 mice were being kept in an unauthorised room in the medical faculty, according to a statement it published on 26 June. It alerted the city’s veterinary authority, which confiscated the mice.

The veterinary authority then approached the public prosecutor’s office, the news website Spiegel Online reported on 27 June. Münster’s laws allow for fines and imprisonment for up to three years for violations of animal protection laws.
