Rectors push for ‘strategic differentiation’

Higher education institutions should have clearly defined functions, responsibilities and offerings, and between them should provide enough options to meet demand, rectors from around the world have said.

University leaders published a declaration on the future of higher education following the Second Hamburg Transnational University Leaders Council on 7 to 9 June. Organising Higher Education for the 21st Century was backed by 47 rectors of universities in countries as diverse as Sweden, Japan and Ghana.

The declaration called for more strategic differentiation between higher education institutions, as “one size does not fit all”.
