More universities plan to break with Elsevier

Four of Berlin’s biggest research institutions plan to cancel their contracts with Elsevier in 2018 to put more pressure on the publisher in ongoing negotiations, they have announced.

The Free University of Berlin, the Technical University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin and the Charité university hospital said this month that they would not extend their contracts after this year, Times Higher Education reported on 11 July.

They will join more than 70 German research organisations that have already cancelled their Elsevier contracts. A consortium of universities and research organisations, led by the HRK, the national association of rectors, has been trying to negotiate a national publishing deal with Elsevier since last year, but no agreement is in sight.
