Refugee plight prompts surge in overseas applicants

More than 20,000 people from abroad applied to study at German universities in the summer, an increase of 40 per cent on the previous year.

A total of 21,433 prospective international students applied to study in the summer semester, which runs from 1 April to 30 September.

These included 3,445 Syrian applicants, meaning Syrians overtook Chinese applicants as the largest group, the news website Spiegel Online reported on 25 July. Syrian applications increased 169 per cent between 2016 and 2017, it said.
