A total of 57 clusters of excellence have been approved for support under Germany’s Excellence Strategy, with annual funding worth €385 million over the next seven years.
The 57 clusters, chosen for funding from a shortlist of 88, were announced on 27 September by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Germany’s largest public research funder. They were picked by the Excellence Strategy’s committee of experts, which consists of international members as well as federal and state research ministers.
The winning projects are based at 34 universities, with 40 of them implemented by an individual institution. Of the rest, 14 will be administered by two universities each and the remaining three will be carried out by consortia of three institutions.
