Gates opens Berlin office

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has opened a second European office, in the German capital, to strengthen its links with the German government and research institutions across Europe.

“We hope to grow the Gates Foundation’s network across Germany and continental Europe,” said Anja Langenbucher, the foundation’s Europe director, who will lead the office. The foundation opened a London office in 2010.

Langenbucher said that Berlin has become a hub for global policymakers and that the foundation looks forward to working with other organisations on programmes to alleviate the suffering of the world’s poorest citizens. The Wellcome Trust, a UK-based health research charity, announced earlier this year that it plans to open a Berlin office in January 2019.
