Germany’s government will provide €95 million for a technology centre to support startups in the life sciences, biotechnology, nanotechnology and intelligent materials.
The startup incubator will be a federal institution based next to Hamburg’s Desy centre for nuclear research, a member of the Helmholtz Association. Desy initiated the idea and will be in charge of building the centre, the organisation said in a statement on 8 November.
The idea behind the initiative is to tap into the economic and innovative potential of emerging technologies by offering startups access to research infrastructure, including laboratories and offices, within the Desy campus, the statement said. Desy pointed out that startups in the life sciences often face high costs and complex technological needs to bring their products to market.
