Windfall for African initiatives

Germany’s education ministry has announced plans to spend at least €300 million on cooperation with African countries in education, science and research.

In an Africa strategy, published on 12 November, the ministry says the funding will go towards furthering internationalisation, and boosting prospects and sustainable development in Africa.

To achieve these goals, the ministry will promote knowledge transfer and innovation to create economic growth in African partner countries. Germany also expressed its wish to help fund higher education and early-career researchers in Africa, in order to offer better career chances to individuals in their home countries.
