A high-profile government advisory committee has proposed strengthening federal support for industrial R&D, highlighting energy and IT as priority areas for increased funding.
In a letter to German chancellor Angela Merkel on 27 February, the Commission of Experts for Research and Innovation (EFI) expressed satisfaction with the overall direction of the government’s research and innovation policy. But it urged a speedy introduction of tax incentives for R&D with a special focus on the needs of small and medium-sized businesses.
In its 2019 annual report, the expert commission also addressed the funding for Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, Germany’s largest public research funder, proposing increases in the average grants available and extending the maximum terms for projects.
