Springer and Projekt DEAL sign ‘transformative’ agreement

Biggest open access deal yet covers 13,000 articles a year

Springer Nature has signed a formal agreement with Projekt DEAL, a pan-German organisation created to push for favourable open-access deals with major scientific publishers.

Projekt DEAL is run by the German Rectors’ Conference and the Alliance of German Science Organisations. According to a joint statement, the deal with Springer Nature constitutes the world’s largest transformative open access agreement, and will shift payments to a publisher away from subscription-based reading and towards a model where papers are free at the point of access.
