Higher education expenditure rises again

Spending from German state and private sources increases, as staff remain biggest budget item

In 2018, universities and university hospitals in Germany spent a total of €57.3bn on teaching, research and healthcare – 6 per cent more than the previous year.

According to Destatis, the German statistics office, most of the money went towards paying staff, which cost a total of €33bn. This was followed by operating expenses at €19.5bn and investments at €4.8bn.
