DFG reprimands scientist over image manipulation

Germany’s biggest science funder clarifies rules on images with “quality issues”

The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Germany’s largest public science funder, has banned a scientist for one year from applying for funding over a case of image manipulation.

The scientist, who has not been named, was found to have used digital tools to “improve” images in a publication co-authored with others, the DFG found. Through a review procedure initiated by the funder, the scientist in question admitted to “embellishing” the images.
