Historians condemn stifling Indian law to limit meetings

German association joins Americans in alarm over proposal to curtail international get-togethers

The German Historical Association (VHD) has issued a statement that “strongly condemns” a policy set by India’s ministry of science, which clamps down on international activities by Indian academics.

According to the policy, Indian higher education institutions can only hold international events—even if they are entirely online—if they have obtained approval from the science ministry. Events that cover Indian internal affairs or other “sensitive issues” will not be approved, the ministry announced last month.
