Federal, state governments agree science funding boost

German research ministers envision annual 3 per cent funding increase for higher education

The Joint Science Conference (GWK), a government science-administration body, decided on a significant increase to funding for research and teaching across Germany.

The Strengthening Study and Teaching programme, administered through the GWK, will be “continuously” increased, said the body, which coordinates science policy between the state and federal governments. In Germany, the federal state and the individual state governments share decision-making authority on higher education policy, with the states responsible for the day-to-day administration of universities.
