Scientists protest DAAD and Humboldt cuts

Joint letter voices alarm after government breaks coalition promise with large budget reductions

More than 50 scientific organisations and thousands of academics have signed an open letter protesting the budget cuts for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

The letter comes after both organisations revealed earlier this month that they would have to scale back their activities significantly, due to reduced contributions from federal funding streams. “As researchers, scholars and academic teachers in and outside Germany, we are writing to express our serious concern about the planned cuts,” the letter said.
