In depth: ‘Generative AI’ technologies such as ChatGPT may be acceptable for producing text or images in funding applications but not in preparing reviews, Germany’s biggest public research funder has said. The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft guidelines on applicants’ use of artificial intelligence recognise the likely impact of these technologies on the future work of academics in both the sciences and humanities.
