Research foundation hopes museum will allow it to reach new audiences

In a bid to expand its science communication reach, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has become a shareholder of the Futurium museum in Berlin. Opened in 2019, the museum bills itself as “the house of futures” and contains exhibitions where futuristic scenarios are played out. It also hosts meetings and events on science, politics and culture.

The DFG wants to use the Futurium as a platform to help emphasise the importance of the research it supports, said DFG president Katja Becker. “This is particularly promising, not least because the Futurium reaches a large number of young people and visitors who are otherwise not in direct contact with science,” she said. “Science communication has become a core element of the dialogue between science, politics and society,” and the DFG has “continuously expanded its activities”.
