€100m on offer to ease German state’s transition from coal

Ministry aims to fund regional innovation networks to boost North Rhine-Westphalia

Germany’s research ministry is making €100 million available for projects to establish new industries in North Rhine-Westphalia to replace its traditional reliance on coal mining.

The country has pledged to phase out the extraction and processing of lignite to achieve its national and international climate targets. For regions such as NRW, this will create changes in the local economy, which the ministry aims to address through funding for the creation of sustainable industries.
