Mental health experts attack German cannabis legalisation

Psychiatrists say there is insufficient evidence for the change in the law

German mental health experts have criticised a law designed to legalise cannabis, saying it lacks sufficient evidence and research.

Under the new law—approved by the German parliament (Bundestag) by 407 votes to 226—over-18s will be permitted to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public and up to 50 grams at home. Smoking cannabis will be legal in public spaces from 1 April, but a general ban on advertising and sponsorship will apply to cannabis sellers and manufacturers.
