Job dissatisfaction rife in Germany’s universities

Majority of junior-level academics are thinking about quitting, survey finds

More than half of Germany’s academics are seriously considering leaving their jobs, according to the results of a survey by the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW).

The centre’s Barometer of Science initiative gathered the opinions of 11,371 academics in 2023, from universities and research institutions across Germany. It found that while only one in five professors are dissatisfied with their jobs, 71 per cent of postdocs on fixed-term contracts are unhappy and would consider resigning from their current posts.
