BRICs missing out on Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is seeing a drop in participation of non-EU countries because of the exclusion of the BRIC states from automatic funding, an EU official has confirmed.

Speaking at the European Innovation Summit on 18 November, Rudolf Strohmeier from the European Commission highlighted reduced interest from non-EU countries as one of the main experiences from the first year of the programme. This is partly because researchers in Brazil, Russia, India and China have struggled to find funds to cover the costs of their participation, he said, after the countries were told they must pay their own way.

“It is taking some time for these countries to adapt so they can provide their own money,” said Strohmeier, who is deputy director-general of research.
