8 per cent success rate for ERC advanced grants

A total of 2,287 proposals were submitted to the European Research Council’s advanced grants funding scheme during 2014, the agency has said, with only 190 grants being awarded.

The success rate was lowest in the social sciences and humanities, in which only 34 proposals were funded of 525 submitted (6.5 per cent). In physical sciences and engineering there were 83 successful proposals among 1,057 submissions (7.9 per cent), while 73 of 705 applications were successful in the life sciences (9.7 per cent).

The 190 successful applicants will share €445 million in grant funding, the ERC announced on 30 June. These will be the first advanced awards to be funded under the ‘excellent science’ pillar of Horizon 2020. Twenty three nationalities were represented among the winners, who will conduct their projects in 17 countries across Europe.
