Commission admits climate change research failings

The research directorate-general must do a better job of funding work intended to help combat climate change, according to research commissioner Carlos Moedas.

Moedas told the European Parliament on 21 June that it was “not good news” that Horizon 2020 is not on track to meet its targets for funding research and innovation related to climate action and sustainable development.

The interim evaluation of Horizon 2020, which was published last month, reported that Horizon 2020 so far allocated just 27 per cent of its funding to climate-related projects, despite having a target of 35 per cent. Furthermore, it only spent 53 per cent of its funding on sustainability-related projects, short of its target of 60 per cent.
