Commission seeks evaluators of ‘disruptive innovation’ proposals

The European Commission has called for people to put themselves forward as potential evaluators for its pilot of a European Innovation Council in Horizon 2020.

The EIC is the Commission’s overarching term for a partial refocusing of its research and innovation support towards “breakthrough innovations that have the potential to create new markets”. It has been a priority for the research commissioner Carlos Moedas, who wants to help create European equivalents of fast-growing US digital companies like Uber and AirBnB.

Last week, the Commission announced it is seeking to expand its pool of proposal evaluators for the parts of the EIC that are being piloted under Horizon 2020. These include making SME Instrument calls more open, focusing more on high-risk, high-gain proposals, and testing new instruments to help businesses scale-up.
