Engineers join call to double ERC budget

An organisation of engineering schools has called for a €4-billion annual budget for the European Research Council under Framework 9.

In a paper published on 27 June, the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER) argued that a €4bn budget would enable the ERC to maintain exclusivity while increasing its success rate to 15 per cent.

At present the ERC’s budget is €2bn per year, and it has a success rate of about 12 per cent. In May, the ERC’s governing body called for the budget to be doubled to enable it to support the more than 30 per cent of top-graded applications that are currently left unfunded.
