Parliament rallies behind Framework programme

MEPs have sung the praises of Horizon 2020 in a debate about its mid-term evaluation, and unanimously called for a bigger budget for its successor programme, Framework 9.

The European Parliament presented a united front during the debate yesterday on a report prepared by its Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (Itre). The report considered the implementation of Horizon 2020 so far and made suggestions for Framework 9.

Without exception, MEPs declared Horizon 2020 to be a success and backed the report’s call to substantially increase the budget for Framework 9. However, they also highlighted areas for improvement, calling for increased support for young researchers, action to redress gender and geographical imbalances, improved compatibility with other funding instruments, and a balance between research and innovation.
