Parliament set to aim higher with FP9 budget demand

The European Parliament looks set to call for a €120-billion budget for the next EU research and innovation programme, Framework 9.

The latest version of a draft report on Framework 9 from the Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, published on 6 June, calls on the European Commission to propose a €120bn budget for the programme, which would be an increase of about €45bn on Horizon 2020.

This demand is a change from the previous version of the draft, written prior to receiving input from other Parliament committees, which said that a budget of €100bn should be guaranteed “as a starting point”. The change may be an attempt to secure a final budget of about €100bn, given that the European Council usually seeks lower budgets than the Commission proposes.
