The European Research Council is planning to reduce the budgets for its single-investigator grants in 2018, to fund the return of the multi-investigator Synergy Grants.
A draft 2018 work programme published by the ERC on 19 July shows that the budget for its Advanced Grants is set to fall by €117 million, or about 20 per cent. Just €450m will be allocated to Advanced Grants in 2018, compared with €567m in 2017 and €540m in 2016.
The number of Advanced Grants awarded is expected to fall from 245 this year to 194 next year. This means that the success rate for applications is likely to decrease, from an already low baseline of just 14 per cent in 2015.
