Return of Synergy Grants prompts fears of greater failure

A plan to cut the European Research Council’s individual-investigator grants to pay for the return of Synergy Grants has prompted concern that ERC success rates will fall further.

A draft 2018 work programme published by the ERC on 19 July set out a strategy to cut individual-investigator grant budgets by €166 million compared with 2017. This will be combined with €84m of additional money from an increased overall ERC budget to fund €250m worth of Synergy Grants next year.
