Jean-Pierre Bourguignon is to serve as president of the European Research Council for a further two years.
Bourguignon, a former mathematician, has led the ERC since January 2014. His reappointment by the European Commission means that he will stay in the post until the end of 2019.
Carlos Moedas, the research commissioner, said in a statement that he was delighted with the decision. “[Bourguignon] has been vital for the continued success of the ERC. I am confident that he, together with the ERC Scientific Council, will further advance excellent EU-funded frontier research,” Moedas said.
