Commission suggestions for R&D missions emerge

European Commission officials have identified digitisation, health, the environment and agriculture as four areas with “high potential” to spawn research missions in the EU’s 2021-27 R&D programme, Research Europe understands.

Missions are being introduced into the Horizon Europe programme to help increase its impact and public support for it. The Commission has previously said that three to five missions should be introduced initially, and that it would set out its views on what those missions could be at a meeting with EU member state representatives from the Council of the EU on 15 October.

The mission areas would be largely in keeping with the results of a public consultation on missions that the Commission held earlier this year. The Commission’s analysis of that consultation, published in June, found that the mission areas that found most favour were digitisation, health and wellbeing, social and economic transformation, and sustainable production.
