Faltering negotiations on the terms of future EU-Swiss relations have prompted university rectors to warn that a deal is of “fundamental importance” for Switzerland’s knowledge economy.
Swiss Universities, the country’s association of rectors, discussed at a meeting on 20 September the possible consequences of a failure to renew the agreement that sets the framework for Swiss-EU relations. It warned on 27 September that it is watching the negotiations “with concern”.
“It is feared that without such a framework agreement, which consolidates the bilateral path, an association of Switzerland to EU education and research programmes from 2021 will not be possible,” Swiss Universities said in a statement.
