The MEP leading for the European Parliament on the EU’s 2020 budget has made research and innovation a priority at the start of the legislative process.

“The EU budget for next year should define clear political priorities,” rapporteur Monika Hohlmeier said in a draft report on the 2020 budget published by the Parliament on 24 January.

Next year’s budget should “enable the union to further invest in innovation and research capacities for future solutions, boost competitiveness and economic growth, ensure a safe, secure and peaceful Europe, strengthen citizens’ work and living conditions, and bolster the union in its fight against environmental challenges and climate change”, according to the report.
