ERC Proof of Concept milestone brings first success for Romania

The European Research Council has awarded the 1,000th grant under its Proof of Concept scheme for commercialising research results, with one of the latest awards going to Romania for the first time ever.

The latest 62 awards under the ERC’s Proof of Concept scheme were announced on 25 July. Among them was the milestone 1,000th award since the scheme launched in 2011, which the EU’s flagship funder gave to Miguel González Herráez, a communications engineer at the University of Alcalá in Spain.

Proof of Concept grants give researchers €150,000 each to explore ways in which previous ERC-funded research could be put to use commercially or socially. González Herráez will use his grant to work on sensor arrays using fibre-optic cables, the ERC said.
