Challenge model: Mission control

The EU is counting down to launch its R&D moonshots—will they soar or misfire?

More than three million European lives saved, zero pollution of the bloc’s waterways and the proportion of soils able to support life doubled to 75 per cent—these are just some of the goals proposed for 2030 by challenge-based ‘missions’ the EU is implementing for the first time this year.

Inspired by the Apollo project of the 1960s and its goal to put a man on the Moon, the missions will draw millions in funding from the 2021-27 R&D programme, Horizon Europe.
