EU governments seeking lower budget than Commission’s proposal, including €70 million less for ERC

National governments want to cut the European Commission’s proposal for the 2022 budget of Horizon Europe, the EU’s R&D programme, by €316 million, as part of a wider plan to shrink the bloc’s 2022 spending by about €1.4 billion.

Under plans adopted by the Council of the EU on 14 July, Horizon Europe would have a 2022 budget of €11.9bn, down from the €12.2bn proposed by the Commission last month.
